Kartavya Anadkat wins 1st Varas Chess Festival Rating Open 2024

Kartavya Anadkat and IM Kaustuv Kundu scored an unbeaten 8/9 each 1st Varas Chess Festival Rating Open 2024. Kartavya won the tournament on tie-breaks, Kaustuv was placed second. Marthandan K U and Avirat Chauhan scored 7.5/9 each. They secured third and fourth place respectively. The total prize fund of the festival was ₹1500000, for Classical rating it was ₹600000. The top three prizes were ₹75000, ₹50000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each. The three-day rating open tournament was organized by Varas Chess Academy at GP Birla Centre, Birla Science Center Complex in Hyderabad, Telangana from 15th to 19th October 2024. Top two score an unbeaten 8/9

Kartavya Anadkat was the sole leader 7.5/8, going into the final round. IM Kaustuv Kundu and Marthandan K U are the only two trailing by a half point at 7/8 each. Kartavya drew with Marthandan to win the tournament, Marthandan secured third place. Kaustuv defeated Abhishek TM to finish second. 10-year-old Avirat Chauhan scored 7.5/9 to finish fourth.

A total of 251 players including two IMs took part from various parts of the country and one from Kenya in this five-day nine round Rating Open tournament. It was organized by Varas Chess Academy at GP Birla Centre, Birla Science Center Complex in Hyderabad, Telangana from 15th to 19th October 2024. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
