Sinquefield Cup: Five draws again

by Shahid Ahmed - 25/08/2025

The sixth round of Grand Chess Tour Sinquefield Cup 2025 had the same results as the previous round. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) was the only player who had the best winning chances against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). The World Champion, D Gukesh had the second-longest game of the round against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). All five games ending in a draw means the standings remain unchanged. Fabiano Caruana (USA) is still the sole leader 4/6. Levon Aronian (USA) and R Praggnanandhaa are at 3.5/6 each, followed by Firouzja, Wesley So (USA), MVL, Gukesh and Samuel Sevian (USA) at 3/6 each. Round 7 starts today at 12 p.m. local time, 10:30 p.m. IST. Photo: Lennart Ootes / Grand Chess Tour

Abdusattorov - Vachier-Lagrave: 0.5-0.5

Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB, 2771) is struggling to find his form at this tournament. This game was no different either. He was lost for the majority of the game against Maxcime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA, 2736). They played six Classical rated games against each other. All of them ended in draws.

Position after 30.Ng1

30...Qh5 31.Qxh5 Rxh5 alleviated the pressure a bit. Instead, 30...Qh7 31.Ra2 Ke7 32.Nf3 Kd8 33.Rg1 Qf7 is one of the many ways how Black could have maintained the upper hand.

Position after 46...Rf3+

47.Ke4 would have kept White in the fight. 47.Kg4?? Rxd3-+ 48.Rxb6 Ke7 should have been winning. Instead, 47...Kxg6?? and Black's last chance evaporated.
